It’s time for a change

It’s the era of change, I suppose…

Starting today I’m joining Frank Wiles — a good friend and fellow Lawrencian — at his consulting firm, Revolution Systems, LLC. I’m really excited to be working with Frank: he’s a great guy, and a crazy-smart developer and sysadmin.

Together, we’re going to be offering professional Django support to companies who need a Django expert on staff, but can’t afford someone full-time.

The Django community is terrific; those who are comfortable with the IRC/mailing list support venue can get great assistance that way. That said, volunteers aren’t always available in an emergency, and for large sites short downtimes can translate into huge losses. Indeed, some companies are a lot more comfortable with open source when it comes with professional support. And sometimes you just need an expert.

I can’t thank my friends and co-workers at Whiskey Media enough for the good times over the last year. Their commitment to helping Django thrive is nothing short of inspiring, and continues through this change: I’m happy that Whiskey Media will be our first client.

I’m hoping that the kind of support we’re offering will be a good complement to the free support already offered by the community. In my dream world, having professional support like ours available will help larger companies feel comfortable adopting Django. Django gets more popular, and we do good business.

However this all works out, it’ll be an interesting next six months!

John Shimek:

Very cool and good luck!

Jeremy Helms:

Sounds like a great venture, and the rates seem spot on for a wide range of clientele. I hope you will blog about some of the more noteworthy issues you'll be seeing (and likewise the solutions). Congrats and good luck!

Adrian Holovaty:

I'm excited to see how this goes. A Web company could do a lot worse than hire you and Frank!

Greg Newman:

Excellent news Jacob. Good luck and congratulations!

Ludvig Ericson:

Although most companies have their in-house semi-expert. (Guilty as charged, I suppose.)

Jeremy Dunck:

Your rudeness filter got my first response, but that's freaking hot stuff, man.

Mauricio Quiros:

Best Wishes in the new journey from a django developer in Costa Rica

Poomalairaj:

Great news Jacob... Definitely Django needs a professional support... Its good to know that you are going to do it. Congratulations and Good luck.

Kurt McKee:

Your feed titles are being double-escaped.

Steve Holden:

Glad to hear there will be a professional Django support house. Hope all goes well. See you at PyCon!

Tony:

Sounds like a good plan - good luck!

$400/month isn't too crazy - and I guess an hour from you is going to be full of 'aha' moments :)

Feel free to delete this comment after running s/compliment/complement/ on the last paragraph...

Rajesh Dhawan:

This is great news indeed! I hope to recommend you to my clients :)

Good luck and congratulations.

Jason Vandecreek:

Thanks for helping further the community - again.
I agree with the bit about business' overcoming adoption hurdles for enterprise software by using professional/dedicated support.
Seems like Lawrence should be added to the Silicon Prairie meme :) Best wishes from south-central Kansas.

Cretian:

Great. But really, it makes me think of what Acquia is and does for Drupal. Jacob, shouldn't you rather concentrate on taking the initiative and pooling the idle devs (AFAIK malcolm, gulopine and other very proficient devs are freelancers) together into proper strike force under the same business model?

Jacob Kaplan-Moss:

Cretian: man, I'd love to be able to do that! My dream is that Revsys will be successful enough with this venture to let us bring on more staff, but really any big plans are dependent on enough business. But that's the fantastic thing about having such a kick-ass community: if our business grows to the point where we need to bring on extra talent, we've got an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

Andy Aristiyanto:

Thanks for helping the community...Good luck!

Lakshman Prasad:

Like Holden for Python, Jacab for django! Professional support for the good!

Just curious, you not interested in 37signals kind SAAS business?

Joe Cotellese:

Congrats on the move.

Devin Venable:

Best of luck with the new gig. By the way, you did a great job in your MC role at PyCon this year.

Pavan Mishra:

Good luck for your endeavour.
